Man brukar säga att historien upprepar sig och det är delvis sant. Det har alltid funnits maktgalna och giriga individer som strävar efter revansch och hämnd. Som vi andra får stå ut med eller göra något åt.
Ryssland har genom historien fött många härskartyper som slagit världen med häpnad och skräck. Själv blev jag obehagligt överraskad när Sovjet i augusti 1968 rullade in sitt pansar i Tjeckoslovakien.
Bara några timmar efter att pansarfordonen passerat gränsen drog vi ihop en demonstration i Norrköping, där vi uttalade vårt fördömande av den dåvarande stormaktens hänsynslösa agerande.
Varje gång Sovjet/Ryssland skramlar med vapnen är syftet detsamma: att tysta all kritik och allt ifrågasättande, det som är härskarnas största skräck. Friheten att granska maktens göranden, att slå vakt om yttrande- och tryckfrihet och att slå vakt om ett rättssystem som står fritt mot makten. Det är det som är demokratins grundvalar som måste skyddas av oss – folket.
Därför har jag skrivit ett brev, på engelska i ett försök att bredda förståelsen, till de ryssar som lyssnar:
Shame on you, Vladimir!
You are now competing with Hitler in being the most evil and destructive power in modern history.
There is a long history of injustice, a lack of freedom and unfair sharing of the production and wealth in your country, between the oligarchs and the ordinary Russians. There have been many thieves throughout Russian history, and some of the worst have been the tsars and the Soviet clans. But, the number one thief in this is you, Vladimir!
You stole Russia’s potential of change and Ukraine’s hope of peace. You have made yourself the most evil person on this planet today. No normal person would start a war and use heavy artillery and missiles in attacking civilian areas like you do in Ukraine. This intentional killing of hundreds of civilians, the destruction of hospitals and schools, all this to satisfy the greed of you and yours, these small men from the caves.
If your mother saw you today – what do you think she would say? “Oh, my Vladimir is a good soldier who have killed more children and elderly people than any other Russian for at least half a century. And he has destroyed so many hospitals and schools too!”
What would your mother say? “Vladimir is a fine boy who let his defenseless victims die on the ground”?
Instead, I think your mother would feel ashamed if she could witness your actions in Ukraine. Give yourself over to international justice! That’s what your mother would say!
